The Pentagon has recently published a report in which it took to shining a spotlight on the security and military developments of China. On this note, it highlights how there has been a substantial acceleration in the military modernization actions and efforts in Beijing. These advancements particularly relate to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and space technologies.
The annual document from the Pentagon was published on the 18th of December and shed light on the overall strategic focus and growing capabilities of China. Most of the skills that were highlighted in the documents have been developed to counter the influence of the US in the Indo-Pacific region.
Moreover, the report emphasized how AI technologies and space-based systems play dual roles in revolutionizing warfare in this day and age.
The Progress Made By China
The primary focus of the report published by the Pentagon is on the advancements of China. This is particularly in technology related to space. The country has managed to grow its fleet of satellites in the last decade alone. There were 36 operational ones back in 2010. The number of satellites has grown to 1,000 as of 2024.
Getting down to the details, 360 of these 1,000 satellites are focused on reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence missions. On this note, Beijing is readily using its assets based in space to boost military operations.
In addition, the gear from up there is being employed to make developments in surveillance capabilities. Consequently, the Chinese are using their systems to keep a close eye on the US and its allied forces.
One of the most impressive features of these systems is their ability to integrate with the data collected by the satellite. Then, AI tools are brought in to help figure out and pinpoint any vulnerabilities in the code. At the end of the day, all this collated information is implemented to help in the precision guidance of missile strikes. This shows that there is unparalleled coordination and collaboration between AI and space technologies.
The Strategy To Collate Information
The Pentagon’s report goes on to explore the adoption of precision warfare across multiple domains by China. It states that this is a strategy being used by the country to synthesize its information across cyberspace, space, sea, land, and air.
This method was initially introduced in 2021 by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which is highlight dependent on the capabilities of big data and AI to process large volumes of data and intelligence information.
Admittedly, the goal of this strategy is to make sure that the military actions being taken by the Chinese are precise and highly coordinated. This reflects a shift in the right direction, which will enable people to make the most use of the latest technologies to serve their strategic purpose.
Where the concept is concerned, it is much like the approaches that were previously taken by the Pentagon. However, they have now become a crucial part of the military doctrine of China.
